Phosphatidylserine (PS) Product Overview

2025-08-11

Phosphatidylserine Introduction

Phosphatidylserine, also known as complex nervonic acid (PS), was first extracted and characterized by Jordi Folch in 1942. Its primary function is to improve nerve cell function, regulate the conduction of nerve impulses, and enhance memory. Due to its strong lipophilicity, it rapidly crosses the blood-brain barrier and enters the brain, soothing vascular smooth muscle cells and increasing blood flow to the brain. It is hailed as a new "smart nutrient" after choline and DHA, the "brain gold." It was officially approved as a new resource food by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China in 2010.

Production Process

Phosphatidylserine (PS) can be synthesized by humans or animals, extracted from plants, or produced from soy lecithin using biocatalytic technology.

The head group of phospholipids can be easily modified through the transphosphatidylation reaction using phospholipases D (PLDs).

Therefore, phosphatidylserine can be produced from phosphatidylcholine or any other phospholipid mixture and serine through PLD catalysis.

Using soybean lecithin as raw material and water as reaction solvent, serine is added and fully emulsified, and then highly active phospholipase D is added for catalysis. After sufficient reaction, petroleum ether is added for extraction and separation. After recovering the petroleum ether, the concentrate is added with food-grade anhydrous ethanol, vigorously stirred to precipitate the solid insoluble matter, centrifuged to recover the ethanol, and the obtained solid is vacuum dried to obtain the phosphatidylserine product.

Main specifications: PS 20% 50% 70% By HPLC

L-αPhosphatidyl-L-serine (20%, 50%, 70%)

Main effects

(1) Improve brain function

Improve Alzheimer's disease: With age, phosphatidylserine and other important brain chemicals will gradually decrease, resulting in weakened memory and cognitive ability. Supplementing phosphatidylserine can increase the number of brain spikes, the fluidity of brain cell membranes, and promote glucose metabolism in brain cells, making brain cells more active. Italy, Scandinavia, and other European countries have widely used phosphatidylserine supplements to treat dementia and memory loss caused by aging.

(2) Helps repair brain damage

Phosphatidylserine is one of the main components of brain nerves. It has the function of nourishing and activating the activity of various enzymes in the brain, which can delay the reduction of neurotransmitters, help repair and renew damaged brain cells, and remove harmful substances.

(3) Promote recovery from mental fatigue

Relieve stress, promote recovery from mental fatigue, and balance emotions: Many studies have shown that phosphatidylserine can significantly reduce the level of excessive stress hormones in people with work-related stress. In addition, phosphatidylserine and DHA can promote each other's absorption and play a protective role on nerve 2A cells. Rich phosphatidylserine can increase the fluidity of cell membranes and promote intellectual development. Phosphatidylserine and DHA together can protect the central nervous system and promote fetal intellectual development.

Product Applications

1. Solid Foods: Generally speaking, PS is more stable when added to solid foods, such as choline-fortified cereal.

2. Beverages: Since PS is an active ingredient, it is recommended for addition to functional beverages.

3. Milk: Added PS can be incorporated into the fat droplets of milk, preventing hydrolysis and improving stability.

4. Yogurt: After pasteurization, PS-fortified drinkable yogurt shows no loss of content throughout its shelf life, demonstrating the strong stability of PS in yogurt.

5. Milk Powder: PS can be added to adult and elderly milk powders and exhibits strong stability.

6. Health Supplements: PS can be added to maternal and infant health supplements such as DHA, where it works synergistically with DHA to protect the 2A nervous system.

7. Food and Dietary Supplements: Legumes and seafood contain phosphatidylserine, which aids brain function. It also relieves depression and prevents Alzheimer's disease, and is particularly effective for students, professionals, and the elderly.
