Exploring Lutein and Zeaxanthin: The Next “Golden Ingredient” for Global Anti-Aging Skin Care?
Mechanism migration from “eye protection” to “skin care”
Lutein and zeaxanthin belong to the carotenoid family and are well known for their core role in the macula of the retina. Studies have shown that both can reduce the damage of oxidative stress to eye cells by filtering high-energy blue light and neutralizing free radicals. This mechanism is also valuable in the field of skin anti-aging. Blue light (400-500nm), as the most penetrating band in visible light, can induce skin collagen degradation and pigmentation. DSM-Firmenich's research shows that lutein and zeaxanthin can absorb short-wave and long-wave blue light respectively, forming a protective layer similar to an “optical barrier”. This feature provides a new idea for resisting “digital aging” caused by blue light from electronic screens.
In addition, the antioxidant capacity of both far exceeds that of vitamins C and E. A 26-year follow-up study published in “Neurology” in 2022 found that lutein and zeaxanthin can significantly reduce the risk of neurodegeneration caused by oxidative stress. The skin, as the largest target organ of oxidative stress in the human body, also benefits from the systemic protective effects of these ingredients.

Multi-dimensional verification of anti-aging efficacy
In recent years, a number of studies have revealed its direct role in skin health. For example, lutein inhibits the release of inflammatory factors by regulating the NF-κB pathway, reducing UV-induced skin erythema and photoaging. Zeaxanthin has been shown to enhance the lipid structure of the stratum corneum and improve the skin barrier function. More notably, a study on the middle-aged and elderly population found that long-term supplementation of lutein and zeaxanthin can reduce the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the skin, which is the key driver of wrinkles and loss of elasticity.
At the application level, OPTISHARP™ Zeaxanthin developed by DSM-Firmenich has solved the problem of water solubility and stability of ingredients through microencapsulation technology. Its patented Actilease® technology can increase the bioavailability of active ingredients by 126%, providing technical feasibility for skin care formulations.

Industry-university-research collaboration accelerates commercialization
Despite their potential, the application of lutein and zeaxanthin in skin care still faces challenges. Problems such as inactivation of ingredients caused by high-temperature processing and low absorption rate of esterified forms need to be overcome urgently. At present, some companies are optimizing the efficacy of ingredients through low-temperature extraction technology and liposome encapsulation technology. For example, a European brand launched a blue light protection essence that combines lutein and astaxanthin, focusing on “double-effect anti-photoaging”. Its sales exceeded one million euros in the first month of its launch.
The Chinese Nutrition Society has raised the recommended intake of lutein to 10 mg/day in the “2023 Dietary Reference Intake of Nutrients”. This policy orientation may further promote its penetration in functional skin care products. Industry experts pointed out that with the accumulation of clinical evidence and regulatory support, lutein and zeaxanthin are expected to become one of the core ingredients in the anti-aging market within 3-5 years.
From visual health to skin anti-aging, the cross-border application of lutein and zeaxanthin reveals the multi-dimensional value of natural ingredients. Driven by the dual forces of "ingredient party" and "scientific skin care", this "golden CP" may open up a new blue ocean in the field of anti-aging.
