Radish Seed Extract is derived from the dried seeds of Raphanus sativus L., a member of the Brassicaceae family. Also known as Radish Seed or Raphani Semen, it has been used as a traditional Chinese herbal material for more than 2,000 years.Traditionally, Radish Seed has been used to support digestion, relieve abdominal fullness and discomfort, promote normal gastrointestinal function, and support the clearance of phlegm and excess gas.The extract contains a variety of naturally occurring bioactive compounds, including sulforaphene (raphasatin) and glucoraphasatin, which are associated with the characteristic pungency of radish seeds and their biological activities.

When we eat fresh radish, its characteristic pungent and slightly irritating sensation comes from isothiocyanate-related compounds generated from glucosinolate precursors.
Among the bioactive compounds found in cruciferous vegetables, sulforaphane is widely recognized for its extensive scientific research, particularly in the field of antioxidant defense and cellular protection.Radish seeds contain another important isothiocyanate-related compound, sulforaphene (raphasatin), which has received comparatively less attention despite its interesting biological properties.Radish Seed, known as (Láifúzǐ) in traditional Chinese medicine, has a history of use in China dating back more than two millennia. Classical Chinese medical texts have traditionally associated it with digestive support, reduction of food stagnation, relief of abdominal fullness, and support for respiratory comfort and phlegm clearance.
The Key Challenge: Stability
Despite the promising potential of the active compounds in Radish Seed, stability is one of the major challenges in developing a practical functional ingredient.
Sulforaphene and related isothiocyanate compounds can be highly sensitive to environmental conditions, particularly moisture, temperature, and processing conditions. Once exposed to water, degradation can occur rapidly, which may significantly reduce the amount of active compound available.
This creates a major challenge for conventional Radish Seed powder:
Freshly processed Radish Seed powder may not be able to maintain a stable level of the target active compounds throughout processing, storage, and application.
In addition, concentrated isothiocyanate compounds may have a relatively strong sensory profile and can be irritating to the gastrointestinal tract at high concentrations, making stability, controlled release, sensory characteristics, and application convenience important considerations in product development.
