Milk thistle, belonging to the Asteraceae family, is an annual herb native to North Africa and Western Europe. Silybin can effectively reduce the liver weight and abdominal fat accumulation of mice with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, reduce serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, regulate the level of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the liver of mice, and alleviate fatty degeneration of liver tissue.
