Milk thistle, belonging to the Asteraceae family, is an annual herb native to North Africa and Western Europe. Milk thistle has been used to solve liver and gallbladder problems for more than 2,000 years. As early as 40 AD, Greek physician and botanist Dioscorides described the advantages of milk thistle. It has now become a core raw material in the field of liver health. In addition, milk thistle also has good advantages in protecting the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Due to the poor stability, low water solubility, poor intestinal absorption, and rapid liver metabolism of silybin itself, the bioavailability of milk thistle extract is very low. The problem of low bioavailability also greatly limits the further application of milk thistle extract.
1.Liver protection
1.1 Hepatoprotective effect of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Silybin can effectively reduce the liver weight and abdominal fat accumulation of mice with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, reduce serum total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, regulate the level of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the liver of mice, and alleviate fatty degeneration of liver tissue.
1.2 Anti-hepatitis

Silybin can effectively reduce the levels of HBV DNA and surface antigen (HBsAg) in the culture supernatant of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected cells and inhibit HBV infection.
1.3 Improve drug-induced liver injury
project | Silymarin monotherapy group (n=84) | Silymarin combined with other drugs treatment group (n=123) |
ALT normalization rate | 74(88.10) | 65(52.85) |
AST normalization rate | 56(91.80) | 91(77.12) |
TBL normalization rate | 21(77.78) | 40(54.05) |
AKP normalization rate | 18(69.23) | 27(50.94) |
Transfer situation | ||
recovery | 59(70.24) | 40(32.52) |
to become better | 24(28.57) | 82(66.67) |
deteriorate | 1(1.19) | 0 |
Progression to liver failure | 0 | 1(0.81) |
The ALT and AST recovery rates in the silybin monotherapy group were approximately 90%, and the final cure rate exceeded 70%.
2.Improve cardiovascular health

Silymarin improves cardiovascular diseases by normalizing biological parameters and restoring cardiovascular function
3.Improve cognitive impairment

Silymarin treatment increased spontaneous alternation ( p=0.006) in mTBI -induced male mice. And silymarin treatment in mTBI -induced mice restored the recognition ratio ( p=0.044) to its normal level as compared to mTBI+vehicle male mice.the results shows that silymarin treatment improved cognitive impairments in mTBI -induced males.
