Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng, is the flagship herb of Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medical system. It is known as the king of Indian herbs and has always been used as an adaptogenic herb. Clinically, ashwagandha has significant benefits in relieving anxiety and stress, improving cognition, enhancing athletic performance, improving sleep, and improving male and female sexual function.
Withania somnifera is the main active ingredient of ashwagandha. Due to its poor water solubility and low bioavailability, the conventional effective dose is above 600 mg, which greatly limits its application in various dosage forms of functional foods. 1. Relieve Anxiety and Stress
Relative to the value at the baseline, the mean PSS was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the Ashwagandha 250 group and also (p < 0.05) in the Ashwagandha 600 group.
Serum cortisol levels reduced with both Ashwagandha 250 mg/day (P < 0.05) and Ashwagandha 600 mg/day (P < 0.0001)
Relative to the value at baseline, the mean HAM-A was statistically significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the Ashwagandha 600 group.Ashwagandha 600 mg/day treatment is effective in reducing anxiety.
3. Improve sports performance
Ashwagandha supplementation is associated with significant increases in muscle mass and strength when consuming 600 mg of ashwagandha root extract daily. And suggests that ashwagandha supplementation may be useful in conjunction with a resistance training program
The increases in muscle strength were statistically significantly greater in the ashwagandha group than in the placebo group, for the upper body and the lower body.
Comparing the ashwagandha group and the placebo group, the results showed that recovery is substantially higher in the ashwagandha group than in the placebo group
For muscle size,the increases are significantly greater in the ashwagandha group than the placebo group in the arm and chest.
Body fat percentages decrease significantly among subjects in the ashwagandha group as compared to the placebo group
4. Improve female sexual dysfunction
Treatment with ashwagandha root extract of 300mg twice daily for 8 weeks leads to significantly higher improvement, relative to placebo, in the FSFI Total score, FSFI domain score for “arousal” , “lubrication” , “orgasm”, and “satisfaction” , and also FSDS score and the number of successful sexual encounters at the end of the treatment. Oral ashwagandha root extract administration of may improve sexual function in healthy women.
5. Improve male fertility
After taking 675 mg/d of ashwagandha for 90 days, the ashwagandha treatment group had a 167% increase in sperm count, a 53% increase in semen volume, and a 57% increase in sperm motility.
6. Lower blood sugar
W. somnifera treatment in diabetes mellitus significantly restored the altered levels of blood glucose ,glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin, lipid profile, serum and oxidative stress markers. The results suggest the potential role of W. somnifera in managing DM.
7. Improve brain function
β-Boswellic acid can promote the growth and branching of hippocampal neuron synapses, significantly improve the growth, branching and microtubule polymerization dynamics of nerve axons, and thus improve memory. Karima et al.'s research results show that strengthening the effect on microtubule polymerization dynamics may be the origin of β-boswellic acid increasing axon growth and branching. They will conduct further research on its complex role in nerves to confirm the improvement of memory by β-boswellic acid.
Ashwagandha may be effective in enhancing both immediate and general memory in people with mild cognitive impairment as well as improving executive function, attention, and information processing speed.
